Isolating Sounds (beginning, middle and end)

Have your students practise isolating beginning, middle and final sounds with 2 types of cards: with and without sound buttons.

Students will listen for individual sounds in words and have to identify the beginning, middle or final sound. This activity not only enhances phonemic awareness but also supports the development of strong decoding and encoding skills, which are vital for reading and writing.

Pack includes 32 words:
- 1/4 Size Cards without sound buttons for whole class "I Spy" game.

- 1/8 Size cards with sound buttons (including sound buttons for beginning, middle and final sounds) for pairs literacy centre game or informal assessment.


MULTIPLE WAYS TO USE THIS RESOURCE:

1. Part of your phonics curriculum:

  • Follow the lesson plan and play "I Spy: as part of your literacy instruction when teaching beginning, middle and final sounds.

2. As a warm up or brain break:

  • Use the Isolating Sound cards no dots to play a quick round of “I Spy” before a phonics lesson or as a transitional game to focus their attention.

3. Use as an Informal Assessment Tool:

  • Use the included tracker and the Isolating Sounds cards with dots to assess and identify specific areas where a student may need additional support.

4. Play in Pairs as a literacy centre game:

Use the Isolating Sounds cards with dots to play a pairs game in your literacy centre. Players have fun collecting as many cards as they can!
